“Yesterday I took a trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo. No, not by plane but by TTC. I only had to go to the Rex Hotel on Queen Street W., where they are featuring Global Jazz Sundays for the month of February at 2pm PWYC. The musician was Jonathan Nvita, appearing with a great band—multicultural to the bone—one was from Japan, one from India, one from Toronto, etc. Jonathan is a transplanted Canadian from the Congo who came here to study music at Humber College. He only sang one song in English, a Bob Marley cover, but the rich spiritual essence of his African heritage blended with jazz was a flight of imagination. Jonathan's exquisite vocals, African rhythms, and spirituality were not transformational but transportational. I had entered a "Star Trek" transporter into the spiritual heart of Africa. It was wonderful. Check out the lineup for the month. Not to be missed”.
